英語で "Who are you?"

英語で "Who are you?"

"Who are you?"

(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

"Who's that guy over there?"「あそこにいる男の人誰?」

"Who's the girl in the pink dress?"「

No!

"Who are you?"

疑問代名詞と人称代名詞で "Who is she?", "Who is he?", "Who are they?"

この "Who are you?" もし私が "Who are you?"

"What's your name?"「お名前は何ですか?」 これに続けて "And you are...?"

"Who am I speaking to?"
"May I ask who's calling?"

"I'm sorry, may I ask who I'm speaking to?"

"What was your name again?"「

という感じなので、"What's your name?"

"I am (Takeshi)"

"This is (Takeshi)".
"This is (Yumi) calling."

I am..."

"Who are you?"

"Who are you?!"

Knowing Whether the Future Has Happened or Not

Talking in English is one kind of struggle for learners, but one other type of struggle altogether is talking on the phone in English; especially for the first time. Imagine this: you receive a phone call and the caller is speaking in English. You answer the call, but you don't recognise the voice on the other end. What do you say? An acquaintance of mine's first instinct was to answer "Who are you?". I laughed and gave him my name; then, all was clear. But what exactly made that call so funny?

By and large, the question word (aka. Interrogative pronoun) "who" corresponds to the Japanese word「だれ」, so translating from one language to the other shouldn't be difficult, right? Let's say you're at a party. It's a party with both Japanese and foreign people alike. It's an excellent chance to make some new friends and hopefully practice some English! So, you point to someone across the room and ask your friend "Who is he?"「彼は誰だ?」. Very simple! If you wanted to be more specific, you could ask phrases such as:

"Who's that guy over there?"「あそこにいる男の人誰?」
"Who's the girl in the pink dress?"「

So, we approach this person for the first time and we ask... "Who are you?" ... Right?

Stop!!

When asking about other people, we can ask "Who is she?", "Who is he?", "Who are they?", etc. However, the one pronoun we shouldn't use is "you". It's quite odd, but it is just considered rude to ask someone "Who are you?", whether it's face to face or over the telephone. It is generally a phrase used in conflict, i.e. I am being defensive and I want to analyse you before I can decide whether I can trust you or not! If a burglar were to sneak into your open window and then bump into you in your kitchen, then you would ask "Who are you?!"「いったい何者だ?!」. But, it's a phrase we should not use if we want to get to know the other person.

Of course, when face-to-face with someone, we are very likely to use the phrase "What's your name?"「お名前は何ですか?」. Or we can start by saying "My name is..."(私の名前は...)which opens the floor for the other person to introduce themselves.

On the phone, however, we need to know how to ask the speaker to identify themselves. If you don't recognise the person speaking, you can ask these:

"Who am I speaking to?"
"May I ask who's calling?"

To add a little more politeness, you can start with "I'm sorry":
"I'm sorry, may I ask who I'm speaking to?"

We also like to use the phrase:
"What was your name again?"「

Perhaps the other person hasn't, in fact, given his or her name, but it's a nicer way to ask "What's your name?" without sounding ignorant.

As a bonus, it is very important to know how to answer the above questions! One common mistake I've heard from my students when we are role-playing phone conversations is introducing oneself with "I am (Takeshi)". This is incorrect, however - We only use "I am..." when meeting someone face-to-face. On the phone, it is necessary to say "This is...".

"This is (Takeshi)".
"This is (Yumi) calling."

The above phrases can help you to identify someone over the phone without sounding intimidating or critical. "Who are you?" has a very specific perception to it in English and should be avoided to keep a friendly atmosphere. Although, if you do see a stranger in your kitchen, you might not hesitate to shout "Who are you?!".
