"I missed!"「ミスした」

...と言う人もいるけど、僕はそれに対して

"You missed what?" 「何を逃したの？」

と聞いてしまいます。

僕はそれぞれのエピソードで避けるべき残念な間違い英語について書いていますが、今日はいい機会なので「間違った」や「ミスした」のような表現を英語で正しく言えるようになりましょう。

「ミス」のようなネイティブに通じないカタカナ英語に頼ってはダメです！

"I missed (something)" と言うと「乗り遅れた」「見逃した」などのように聞こえます。例えば

"I missed the bus."「バスに乗り遅れた。」
"I missed my favorite TV show."「大好きなテレビ番組を見逃しちゃった。」

「ミス」の場合は、miss ではなく、"make a mistake" というのが正しい翻訳です。

"I made a mistake on my application form." 「申込書の記入を間違えた。」

Mistake は動詞としても目的語を付けて使えるますが、この言い方は多くのネイティブスピーカーにとってちょっと改まった言い方です。"make a mistake" より稀に使用するという感じです。

"I mistook the directions to your house."「お宅までの道を間違えてしまいました。」

「間違う」を英語で表現する場合、ネイティブに聞いたら一番よく使うのは get (something) wrong と言われると思います。

"I got most of the answers wrong on the test." 「テストの問題のほとんど間違えちゃった。」
"The boss often gets my name wrong."「上司はよく私の名前を間違ってます。」

get (something) wrong の 'get' の代わりに 'spell, say, play, hear' などの動詞に置き換えることもできます。

"You spelled my name wrong!" 「僕の名前のスペルを間違ったよ！」
"You played that note wrong." 「間違った音を弾いたよ。」

2つ以上のモノや事を「取り違える間違い」のときは言い方がいくつかあります。ネイティブが好きな言い方の一つは 'confuse' です。

"I often confuse the words 'then' and 'than'."「英語の then と than をよく混同する。」

'confuse' と同じ意味で 'mix up' というのも人気です。

"I mixed up the salt and the sugar and poured the salt into my coffee."「塩と砂糖を混同してうっかり塩をコーヒーに入れちゃった。」

また、もうちょっと改まった言い方で 'mistake' を 'for' と組み合わせて 'mistake (A) for (B)' とも言います。

"I often mistake Sherry for Jill. They look so alike!" 「よくシェリーをジルと間違えます。すごく似ていますね」

日本語の「失敗する」という言葉に注意を向けてみましょう。これはおおむね 'fail' と翻訳されますが、たまに 'mistake' にもなります。ただし、'fail' と 'mistake' は意味として一致しないと思います。 動詞の 'fail' は「不成功」「不合格」のような意味合いです。しかし、'mistake' というのは「誤り」や「判断ミス」と同じです。

〇 "I failed my exam."「試験で間違った。」
× "I mistook my exam."「間違った試験を受けた。」

適切に 'mistake' を使った例文は以下です。

"I made a mistake and gave the customer too much change."「間違えてうっかりお客さんにお釣りを余分に渡した。」

適切に 'fail' と 'mistake' を使い分けた例文は以下です。

You are going to make many mistakes when speaking English. But, it's important to know that getting something wrong doesn't mean you have failed at English. Never give up!
「英語で話してみたらいっぱい間違うに決まっています。でも、いくら間違ってもそれは失敗したというわけではありません。くじけないでくださいね！」

In each episode I write about mistakes you should avoid when speaking English. Today, though, I felt that as I am writing a blog on English mistakes, it was rather necessary to talk about the mistakes that Japanese people make when talking about their mistakes! "I missed!"「ミスした」
You missed what? The critical error of relying on katakana-English strikes again!

If you say in English that you missed something, it means that you didn't catch it because you were late or because you overlooked it. For example, we often say phrases like:
"I missed the bus."間に合わなかったから「バスに乗り遅れた。」
"I missed my favorite TV show."「大好きなテレビ番組を見逃しちゃった。」
When we talk about 「ミス」, the correct phrase we need to use is "make a mistake".
"I made a mistake on my application form." 「申込書の記入を間違えた。」
"Mistake" can also be used as a verb followed by an object, but I think to many native speakers, this usage feels a little formal and, so, is less commonly used.
"I mistook the directions to your house."「お宅までの道を間違えてしまいました。」

Native speakers are more likely to use "get (something) wrong".
"I got most of the answers wrong on the test." 「テストの問題のほとんど間違えちゃった。」
"The boss often gets my name wrong."「上司はよく私の名前を間違ってます。」
It's possible to replace the verb "get" with certain other verbs, such as "spell", "say", "play", "hear", etc.
"You spelled my name wrong!" 「僕の名前のスペルを間違ったよ！」
"You played that note wrong." 「間違った音を弾いてたよ。」

When you confuse two different objects, there are several phrases you can use. In this case, we often use say "confuse".
"I often confuse the words 'then' and 'than'."「英語の then と than をよく混同する。」
Another common phrase is "mix up":
"I mixed up the salt and the sugar and poured the salt into my coffee."「塩と砂糖を混同してうっかり塩をコーヒーに入れちゃった。」
Again, a little more formal, but we can use the verb "mistake" with "for", i.e. "mistake A for B." "I often mistake Sherry for Jill. They look so alike!" 「よくシェリーをジルと間違えます。すごく似ていますね」

I'd like to draw attention to the Japanese verb 「失敗する」, which is generally translated to "fail" in English. Sometimes it is translated to "mistake" too, but the meaning of "fail" is different from "mistake".
A "failure" (noun) refers to an overall endeavour that was ultimately unsuccessful.
O "I failed my exam."「試験で間違った。」
X "I mistook my exam."「間違った試験を受けた。」
A "mistake", on the other hand, refers to an error or a bad judgement.
O "I made a mistake and gave the customer too much change."「間違えてうっかりお客さんにお釣りを余分に渡した。」
X "I failed and gave the customer too much change."

You are going to make many mistakes when speaking English. But, it's important to know that getting something wrong doesn't mean you have failed at English. Never give up!
