"What is it like to be a cat?" 「猫としての生活はどんな感じだと思いますか？」

たいていの人にとって、真面目にこのような質問に答えるのは初めてでしょう？英語の先生として想像的な会話を促すためには、こういう変わった質問をします。いいアイデアを出すのは簡単ではないです。特に想像力を普段あまり使わない人にとっては難しいはずです。 生徒さんがどう答えるかの例を見てみましょう。

× "I image that it's very easy. You can sleep all day and someone feeds you when you're hungry!"
「私のイメージでは、（猫の生活は）とても楽なはずです。ずっと眠れるしお腹がすいたら飼い主がすぐ餌をくれますし！」

イメージとしては面白い...！ところが、この答えの例文は英語としては誤りです！

何かを想像してみてください、という質問に対して日本人の生徒さんからは

"I image...(アイ・イメージ...）"「僕の想像では...です。」

で始まる回答が多いです。しかしこのよく耳にする言い方は致命的に誤りです。英語の 'image' は外来語として日本に定着しています。ところが 'image' は名詞で、動詞形だと 'imagine' になります。名詞だけでなく動詞としても使えそうですよね？使えません！冒頭の例文を正しくいってみましょう。

× "I image that it's very easy.
〇 "I imagine that it's very easy.

そして、じつはもう一つ問題があるんです。発音もよく間違われてしまいます。和製英語の「イメージ」という発音をされてしまうことがよくあります。英語の 'image' の正しい発音は「/ˈɪmɪdʒ/（イミッジ）」です。これも練習しましょう。

正しい使い方と、正しい発音をきちんと覚えましょう！

"The visitors left with a very positive image of Japan."「来訪者たちは日本に対してとてもポジティブなイメージをもって帰国しました。」

'image' の代わりに 'impression' という単語もほぼ同じ意味で使えます。

"My impression of Norway is that it snows very often there."「ノルウェーって、僕のイメージではよく雪が降るところだ。」

ただし、この名詞の 'impression' を動詞形の 'impress' にしてしまうと、意味も使い方も違います。いい印象を与える、心を捉える、などと言いたい時に使います。イメージの意味を表すには必ず名詞を使いましょう。

× "I impress that people from your country don't like spicy food."「あなたの国の人は辛い食べ物が苦手だと私が印象付けます。」
〇 "It's my impression that people from your country don't like spicy food." 「僕のイメージでは、あなたの国の人は辛いものが苦手です。」

正しい使い方の例文です：

"That magician really impressed me with his magic tricks."「そのマジシャンの手品のトリックには本当に感心してしまった。」
"He tried to impress the beautiful woman with his expensive car."「彼は高価な車であの美人の心を捉えようとした。」

そういえば、質問が答えにくいときは「想像できないなぁ！」って、どう言えばいいのでしょうか。普段は否定文では 'do not' という形式を使うので、

"I don't imagine" って言いたくなりますよね？

でも、これではいけません。正確に言うには 'can not' を使う必要があります。

"I can't imagine" になります。

"I can't imagine what living in Siberia is like." 「シベリアに住むなんて、想像もつかない。」
"I can't imagine why he would quit his job." 「彼がなぜ仕事をやめたか、心当たりがない。」

みんなに聞いてみたいことがあります。

What is your image/impression of my country, Ireland? 「あなたは僕の国のアイルランドに対してどんなイメージがありますか。」

返答としてよく得るのは

"I imagine it's a very cold country." 「かなり寒いところのように思います。」

でも僕の返事はこうなります！

Well, it's cold in winter, but not much different from Tokyo winter! 「まぁ、冬は寒いが、東京の冬と比べてそんなに違いません。」

"What is it like to be a cat?" 「猫としての生活はどんな感じだ思いますか？」
You probably were not expecting that sort of question! Sometimes, as a teacher, I'm required to ask these kinds of hypothetical questions to stimulate creative discussion in English among students. It can be very difficult to come up with some good examples, especially for those who are not used to being creative.
Here is an example of an answer that I may be given:
X "I image that it's very easy. You can sleep all day and someone feeds you when you're hungry!"「私のイメージでは、（猫の生活は）とても楽なはずです。ずっと眠れるしお腹がすいたら飼い主がすぐ餌をくれますし！」

It's a common but fatal error when I hear a student answer with "I image...". Japanese has incorporated the word 'image' from English, and it is used as both a noun and a verb respectively (ime-ji, ime-ji suru). The problem in the above phrase, however, is that the speaker is trying to use the noun 'image' as a verb, when the actual verb is 'imagine'. The following are correct:
"I imagine that it's very easy (to be a cat). You can sleep all day and someone feeds you when you're hungry."
"I imagine that in the future we will have flying cars."「将来私たちはは空飛ぶ車を運転することになるはずです。」

Another mistake that you cannot make is the incorrect pronunciation of 'image'. Japanese people are prone to pronouncing this word in the Japanese manner, i.e. "ime-ji", but this is not like the English word, which must be pronounced /ˈɪmɪdʒ/. As this word is a noun, there is only one single pronunciation; so remember it well!
"The visitors left with a very positive image of Japan."「来訪者たちは日本に対してとてもポジティブなイメージをもって帰国しました。」

Alternatively, we can use the word "impression":
"My impression of Norway is that it snows very often there."「ノルウェーって、僕のイメージではよく雪が降るところだ。」
From the noun impression comes the verb 'impress'; however, we cannot say the following: X "I impress that people from your country don't like spicy food."
O "It's my impression that people from your country don't like spicy food." 「僕のイメージでは、あなたの国の人は辛いものが苦手です。」

This is because the verb carries a different meaning; that is, to create a strong or positive impression on someone.
"That magician really impressed me with his magic tricks."「そのマジシャンの手品のトリックには本当に感心してしまった。」
"He tried to impress the beautiful woman with his expensive car."「彼は高価な車であの美人の心を捉えようとした。」

But, what should you say when you can't answer the question? It's not possible to create a negative with 'don't', i.e. "I don't imagine". We must negate the verb with 'can't - "I can't imagine".
"I can't imagine what living in Siberia is like." 「シベリアに住むなんて、想像もつかない。」
"I can't imagine why he would quit his job." 「彼がなぜ仕事をやめたか、心当たりがない。」

Before I go, one final question.
What is your image/impression of my country, Ireland? 「あなたは僕の国のアイルランドに対してどんなイメージがありますか。」
A common answer I receive is:
"I imagine it's a very cold country." 「かなり寒いところのように思います。」
To which I reply:
"Well, it's cold in winter, but not much different from Tokyo winter!"「まぁ、冬は寒いが、東京の冬と比べてそんなに違いません。」
