「楽しかったです」を英語で正しく伝えよう！／'Could + 動詞' でよくやる残念な英語翻訳| 翻訳会社が送るニールのブログ『日本人だけのざんねんな英語・ボクが直します！』

テーマパークへのお出かけ、高級レストランでのおいしい料理、きれいな桜の下での花見... これらをどう感じますか？楽しいですよね！僕はレッスンで生徒さんに、週末や休みに何をしたかを聞くだけでなく、その感想も必ず聞いてみます。よく聞く答えは以下のようなものです。

"The food and the atmosphere was wonderful, so I could enjoy it".

「食べ物も雰囲気も素晴らしかったから、楽しかったです。」という表現なのだと思います。でもこれ、英語ネイティブが聞くと、ちょっとニュアンスが違います。

日本の人は「楽しかったです」を「楽しむことが出来ました」の感覚で翻訳して 'could enjoy' を使う癖があるようです。チャンスや機会があって「～することができた」と言うときは、ただ動詞の単純過去形で十分です。正しくは：

"The food and the atmosphere was wonderful. I enjoyed it".

'Could enjoy' を使った場合、文のニュアンスが変わります。ネイティブスピーカーにとっては（何らか障害があって）出来ないことが出来た印象になります。

もし自由の女神を見たことを
"When I went to New York, I could see the Statue of Liberty." と言えば、「ニューヨークに行ったとき自由の女神を見れました。」という単純にチャンスの話ではなく、
「天気が晴れて霧が出なかったから自由の女神を見ることができた」とか、
「私は目が悪いがちゃんとした眼鏡などのおかげでくっきり自由の女神を見ることができた」など、何かの問題を乗り越えたので見ることが出来たという意味になるのです。

'Enjoy' と言えば、英語でしばしば使う表現です。もう少し使い方をマスターしましょう。'Enjoy' は 'myself' や 'ourselves' などの「自分」を表す代名詞とも使います。
"I enjoyed myself" の翻訳は「自分を楽しんだ」ではなく、むしろ "I enjoyed it" と同じように「楽しかったです」です。

"Thanks for inviting me. I enjoyed myself."「誘ってくれてありがとう。楽しかった。」
"The children certainly look like they're enjoying themselves!"「子供たちは本当に楽しそうに遊んでいるね。」

'Enjoy' を強調するには 'really' や 'a lot' のような言葉を使うのはもうご存知ですね。
"I really enjoyed your dinner. You're a great cook!"「あの晩ご飯とてもおいしかった。キミの料理の腕、ホントに大したものだよ！」
"Wow, that was a great movie. I enjoyed it a lot."「うわー、素敵な映画だったね。すごく楽しかった。」

「楽しかった」の表現は 'enjoy' 以外にもいろいろあります。

'Fun' もよく使います。「楽しかった」は "It was fun" か "I had fun" です。間違って "I was fun"（私は楽しい人でした）と言わないように気を付けてくださいね。
"I had a lot of fun at the summer festival last year."「去年の夏祭り、めっちゃ楽しかった！」
"It was fun meeting your friends today."「昨日はあなたの友達に会って楽しかった。」

'Have a good time' もネイティブはよく言います。'Good' のほかにポジティブな形容詞（例えば、great/awesome/fantastic など）で入れ替えることができます。
"Did you have a good time at the zoo?"「動物園は楽しかったの？」

プロフェッショナルな場面でも 'enjoy' を使って構いません。しかし、'fun' だとふさわしくないと思います。'fun'は改まった感じがしない言い方です。
〇　"I really enjoyed your presentation. You had some interesting ideas."「プレゼンテーションはとても面白かったです。興味深いアイディアでしたね。」
×　"It was fun hearing your ideas."「あなたのアイディアを聞いて楽しんだ。」

あるイベントなどが楽しかったと伝えたいときは 'have a wonderful time' と言ってみてはどうですか。
"Thank you for inviting us to attend your seminar. I had a wonderful time meeting others and sharing ideas."
「ゼミナールへ招待してくださってありがとうございました。他の皆さんに会ってアイデアを交わし、楽しい時間を過ごしました。」

改まった挨拶などでは礼儀正しい 'It was a pleasure' という表現もお薦めします。
"It was a pleasure to meet you and your colleagues."「あなたと同僚たちの皆さんにお会いできてうれしかったです。」

A trip to a theme park, dinner at a fancy restaurant, a picnic under the cherry blossoms... these are all fun to do! When I ask my students about their activities over the previous weekend or holiday, I don't want to just know what they got up to, but also their impressions and feelings about that activity. So, I am likely to hear something such as:
"The food and the atmosphere was wonderful. I could enjoy it". 「食べ物も雰囲気も素晴らしかったから楽しかった。」

A lot of Japanese people tend to use 'could' in this manner, but it isn't always necessary and can carry a different nuance. For example, a Japanese speaker might say the following in English:
"When I went to New York, I could see the Statue of Liberty."「ニューヨークにいったとき、自由の女神が見れました。」
To a native speaker, however, this sounds like the speaker found the ability to see Statue of Liberty, perhaps because it was a clear day without fog, or perhaps because they were wearing a good pair of glasses!
When talking about the opportunity or chance to do something, only the simple past form of the verb is needed. So, let's look at the correct way to say the above phrases:
"When I went to New York, I saw the Statue of Liberty."
"The food and the atmosphere was wonderful. I enjoyed it".

Speaking of 'enjoy', we frequently use this in English. This can be emphasized by using words like 'really' and 'a lot'.
"I really enjoyed your dinner. You're a great cook!"「あの晩ご飯とてもおいしかった。料理の腕、ホントに上手だよ！」
"Wow, that was a great movie. I enjoyed it a lot."「うわー、素敵な映画だったね。すごく楽しかった。」
Interestingly, 'enjoy' can also be used with reflexive pronouns, i.e. myself, herself, etc.
A phrase like "I enjoyed myself" simply has the same meaning as "I enjoyed it".
"Thanks for inviting me. I enjoyed myself."「誘ってくれてありがとう。楽しかった。」
"The children certainly look like they're enjoying themselves!"「子供たちは本当に楽しそうに遊んでいるね。」

Of course, there are other common phrases we can use apart from 'enjoy'. We also use the word 'fun' a lot.
"It was fun meeting your friends today."「あなたの友達に会えて楽しかった。」
It's also possible to say "have fun", but be careful not to confuse the subject, e.g. "It was fun" vs "I had fun". Some students mistakenly say phrases like "I was fun".
"I had a lot of fun at the summer festival last year."「去年の夏祭りめっちゃ楽しかった。」
Speaking of 'have', we can also "have a good time".
"Did you have a good time at the zoo?"「動物園楽しかったの？」

In more professional contexts, it's possible to use 'enjoy'.
"I really enjoyed your presentation. You had some interesting ideas."「プレゼンテーションはとても面白かったです。興味深いアイディアでしたね。」
'Fun', however, sounds out of place in these contexts.
X "It was fun hearing your ideas."「あなたのアイディアを聞いて楽しんだ。」
If you enjoyed your time, you can say "have a wonderful time".
"Thank you for inviting us to attend your seminar. I had a wonderful time meeting others and sharing ideas."「ゼミナールへ招待してくださってありがとうございました。他の皆さんに会ってアイデアを交わし、楽しい時間を過ごしました。」
To finish, I recommend a very polite and proper phrase, "It was a pleasure"
"It was a pleasure to meet you and your colleagues."「あなたと同僚たちの皆さんにお会いできてうれしかったです。」
