We're almost there! もう少しですよ！先週のエピソードで、'almost' の正しい使い方について勉強しましたが、今日はその続きをやりましょう。

日本の人は「だいたい」とか「ほとんど」という表現をよく使いますよね、だから 'almost' ばかり使っている印象があります。

ネイティブがよく使う「だいたい」とか「ほとんど」という表現は他にもあるので、今回はこれらを学びましょう！全部の言い方を覚えるのは大変かもしれないけど、ネイティブっぽい表現なので、使いこなせるのは大事だと思います。じゃ、続けましょう！

英語のミーティングなどでは「だいたい」とか「ほとんど」と表現するために、何度も 'almost' を使っていませんか。これでは会話が単調になりますし、知的に見えずらく、あまりかっこよくありません。英語ネイティブは同じ単語を繰り返すのをなるべく避けるように話すからです。

"Last year, there was almost no difference in sales figures and almost all of our products continued to sell well. Plus, there were almost no dissatisfied customers!" （昨年は売上高に「ほとんど」変化はなく、当社の「ほとんど」の製品はよく売れ続けました。さらに、満足度の低い顧客は「それほど」いませんでした。）

「ほとんど～だ」と言いたい場合、 'almost'に加えて 'nearly' が使えます。

「ほとんど～ない」という場合には 'almost'に加えて 'hardly' の出番です！

さっきのミーティングの例を、nearly、hardlyを使って表現してみましょう。

"Last year, there was almost no difference in sales figures and nearly all of our products continued to sell well. Plus, there were hardly any dissatisfied customers!" （昨年は売上高に「おおかた」変化はなく、当社の「ほぼ」すべての製品はよく売れ続けました。さらに、満足度の低い顧客は「ほとんど」いませんでした。）

「ほとんど～ない」と表現する場合の 'hardly' を前回に勉強した'almost' と対応させると以下のようになります。覚えておくといいと思います。

'almost no' = 'hardly any'
"Unfortunately, there has been hardly any interest in our latest promotion." 「あいにく最新のキャンペーンがほとんど関心を集めていません。」

'almost never' = 'hardly ever'
"I hardly ever have time to watch TV these days." 「最近テレビを見る暇がほとんどないよね。」

'almost nothing' = 'hardly anything'
"The plan fell through, so there is hardly anything we can do now." 「計画が失敗に終わったから今さらどうしようもないです。」

ボーナスで、カジュアルな英語での 'almost' や 'nearly' を使った大げさな言い方も紹介します。これは強い感情を表すために使われます。例えば：

"I almost died of embarrassment."「死にたいほど恥ずかしかった。」

"I lost my favourite hat in Berlin. I was so upset, I nearly cried."「ベルリンで大好きな帽子をなくしちゃった。ほんとに泣くかと思った。」

"The movie was so scary, we nearly ran out of the theater!" 「映画館から逃げ出したくなるほど怖い映画だった！」

We're almost there! もう少しですよ！
Last week, we looked at how to correctly use 'almost' in English. We also saw that there are other ways to express this concept; so many, in fact, that we need a second episode on it! Although remembering all of these ways of expression may be troublesome, I feel it's important to cover them all as native speakers use them frequently. So, let's move on!

Another common way to express a low degree of something is to use the word "hardly". Just like 'almost', when using 'hardly' with nouns, we need to use degree words. However, as 'hardly' is used in affirmative sentences, the degree words must change to affirmative ones. For example:
'almost no' = 'hardly any'
"Unfortunately, there has been hardly any interest in our latest promotion." 「あいにく最新のキャンペーンがほとんど関心を集めていません。」
'almost never' = 'hardly ever'
"I hardly ever have time to watch TV these days." 「最近テレビを見る暇がほとんどないよね。」
'almost nothing' = 'hardly anything'
"The plan fell through, so there is hardly anything we can do now." 「計画が失敗に終わったから今さらどうしようもないです。」

It's not just nouns; the words 'almost', 'nearly' and 'hardly' can also be used with verbs and adjectives, too. In this case, however, 'almost' and 'nearly' only describe a high degree, so these words are used without the help of any degree words.
"We have almost finished the annual report." 「年次報告書はほぼ出来上がりました。」
"The gas tank is nearly empty. I need to pull into a gas station."
「ガソリンタンクがほとんど空っぽだ。ガソリンスタンドに寄らないと。」
When describing a low degree, here is where 'hardly' comes in! Again, a degree word is not used.
"You've hardly touched your food." 「食事をほとんど食べていないね。」
"We hardly use this software anymore." 「もうほとんどこのソフトウェアは使いません」

When using adjectives, including words like 'almost' is generally not possible as it often does not make much sense. Instead of 'almost' or 'nearly', we use 'mostly'.
"Last year we had mostly solid accomplishments." 「去年の営業実績はおおかたしっかりしました。」
"The outlook for January is mostly grim." 「一月の見通しはおおかた厳しそうです。」
Similarly, instead of 'hardly', we can use 'not very'.
"I honestly think his writing style is not very good."「正直言えば、彼のライティング・スタイルがあまりよくないと思う。」
"It's not really feasible to make changes to the report at this late stage." 「今さら報告書の変更をする余地はないと思います。」

As a bonus, in casual English, 'almost' and 'nearly' are used with adjectives to exaggerate feelings about situations. For example:
"I lost my favourite hat in Berlin. I was so upset, I nearly cried."「ベルリンで大好きな帽子をなくしちゃった。ほんとに泣くかと思った。」
"I almost died of embarrassment."「死にたいほど恥ずかしかった。」
"The movie was so scary, we nearly ran out of the theater!" 「映画館から逃げ出したくなるほど怖い映画だった！」
