Arc Communications Year in Review: Top 5 “Globalization” News
The theme of this issue’s “Get to Know Our Staff” feature was to sum up 2012 in a single ideogram. The word that summarized 2012 for me had been “global”, but I wasn’t able to think of a lone ideogram that expressed this particular concept.
Since Arc Communications was established in 2005, we have been helping customers deal with their business ventures on an international scale through our main services: translation, interpretation and global website development. In 2012 more than ever, however, we could see “globalization” written just about everywhere. So, here’s a ranking of globalization-related news at Arc Communications.
No. 5: An increasingly international team
This year, we welcomed two non-Japanese employees into Arc Communications, one of whom is interviewed in this issue.

No. 4: Sports victories in international events
Cross-country skier Yuichi Onda and ski-orienteer Morihiro Horie are currently training for this year’s world championships, the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 (Val di Fiemme, Italy, from February 20 to March 3) and the World Ski Orienteering Championships 2013 (Ridder, Kazakhstan, from March 3 to 11) respectively.

No. 3: Helping Japanese companies develop global websites; researching the number of Mothers-listed companies with multilingual websites
Tokyo Stock Exchange divides its listed stock into three categories: the First Section (for large companies), the Second Section (for SMEs), and Mothers (Market Of The High-growth and EmeRging Stocks; for high potential start-up companies).
This year again we researched how many Japanese companies have global websites. While 76% of the companies listed in the First Section possess an English website, what about Mothers-listed start-ups?

No. 2: Opening of UNIV. IN JAPAN, a portal site designed to present English-based degree programs at Japanese universities
More and more Japanese universities offer a chance for students to obtain degrees in all-English degree programs.

No. 1: Launch of our own English training serviceArc Communications now offers a training program specializing in “workplace English” and “communicativity”.
English training service (Japanese only)
I personally tested every single one of our new English training courses. It felt extremely refreshing to be participating in English training for the first time in 25 years! It was also highly stimulating to observe how speaking English through a communication skills reinforcement program can spark new reactions between people!
With “Hatsuon Sapuri®” (pronunciation supplement), participants can experience an improvement of their English pronunciation skills in just over a few hours. It also reminds you that, unlike Japanese, you need to flex your facial muscles in order to pronounce English correctly! In “English Teleconference,” a lecturer with strong experience in the international business field teaches the basics and more of teleconferencing. “Brick Your Way into English” is a team building exercise inspired by a NASA program. It make you use the right hemisphere of your brain!
All these programs are designed to enable us to speak and draw out the English proficiency required in a working environment.
Would you like to give it a try? There is, of course, a discount for funNOTE subscribers! (laughs)
I wish you the very best in 2013!
