残念なカタカナ英語「リピする」/もう一度やる、の正しい英語表現

もう一度やる、の正しい英語表現

こんな場面を想像してみてください。
僕は友達と東京のおしゃれなカフェで楽しい時間を過ごして、そろそろ帰る時間。みんなとバイバイを交わします。

"That was fun!"「楽しかったね!」と僕は言って
"Yeah! Would you like to repeat it?"「ね!今度リピートしない?」
と友達の一人が返事します。

意味はわかるし、またここに来て話したいと思っています。けど、僕は心の中で 'Repeat' ってこの場合ちょっと変かな、と思っています。

(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

'repeat' じゃなくて 'again'

日本語で「リピートする」とか「リピする」は、場所やモノなどが気に入って、また同じところに行ったり、同じものを買ったり、同じようなことをする、という言い方ですよね。「リピ買い」とか「リピ決定」とか。

英語ネイティブに "I want to repeat it" と言ったら、もしかすると相手がうろたえてしまうこともありえます。

今日の全部を最初から最後まで再現する、というように取れるからです。

「リピしようよ」は、次のように言いましょう。
"Would you like to go again?"「また今度リピートしようか?」
"Let's do lunch again sometime!"「またいつかランチしようね!」
"I want to watch that movie again."「その映画また見たいよ。」

意外と簡単ですね!ただ again を使えばうまく言えるのです。

'repeat' は「再現する」に近い

英語のレッスンで僕はよく生徒さんたちに
"Please repeat" や "Repeat after me" 「繰り返してください」とか言います。

生徒さんたちからも "Could you repeat that?" 「もう一度お願いします」などの発言があります。

ここでの 'repeat' の意味で考えると、同じことをちょうどそのまま繰り返す、と言うことになります。

僕が "What time is it?" と言うと、生徒さんたちが全く同じように "What time is it?" と繰り返します。

こう考えれば "Would you like to repeat it?" では、同じカフェに行くだけではなく、ちょうど同じ体験も再現することになります。同じ注文をして、同じ席に座って、同じ会話までもするぐらい!それじゃちょっとつまらないかな?

'repeat' は留年や追試にもよく使われる

'repeat' は、学校や試験などに関わることによく使われます。

例えば、とても残念な話ですが、学業成績がかなり悪かったため、その学年を留年することになってしまうとか。

"I'm afraid your son must repeat the fourth grade."「残念ですが、息子さんは4年生を留年するほかはないです。」

大学生の場合は、次のような会話も珍しくもないかもしれません!

"I failed the exam, so I have to repeat it."「試験をしくじって追試をうけなくちゃ。」

だから、学校では一生懸命頑張ってくださいね!

やり直すなら 'start again', 'start over'

あるタスクなどを始めてから、途中でうまくいっていないと気づくこと、ありますよね?
最初からやり直そうと決めた場合は、どういえばいいのかな?

この場合は 'start again' で始めましょう!
"My explanation was too confusing. I'll start again."「私の説明がわかりにくかったですね。最初から言い直します。」

もう一つの便利なフレーズは 'start over' です。
"The painting wasn't turning out right, so I started over."「絵がうまくいかなくて最初から描き直し始めた。」

ここで 'repeat' は使いたくないですね!同じ失敗を最初から再現する、ということになってしまうのです。
"I don't want to repeat the same mistakes I made."「前に失敗したのを繰り返したくない!」

先生などの言うことを 'repeat' すればスピーキングや発音が鍛えられます。失敗は 'repeat' しないように! 'Try again' ですよ!

Don't Repeat After Me!

Imagine this setting. Some friends and I had just had a nice time at a cool café in Tokyo. It was time for us to go our separate ways, so we all said goodbye.
"That was fun!", I said.
"Yeah! Would you like to repeat it?", one of my friends replied.
This was quite an odd request, I thought. It seems troublesome to replicate everything again!

In Japanese, I've heard people use the word 「リピートする」 quite often, in the sense of wanting to do something once more. Perhaps the meaning of "I want to repeat it" is understandable to native English speakers, but later I'll explain why it doesn't sound natural. But first, to correct the earlier phrase, it's best to say:
"Would you like to go again?"「また今度リピートしようか?」
It's quite simple - all you really need is the word "again".
"Let's do lunch again sometime!"「またいつかランチしようね!」
"I want to watch that movie again."「その映画また見たいよ。」

In English class, I often say to students "Please repeat" and "Repeat after me". Likewise, sometimes the students ask me "Could you repeat that?". When you look at the word in this sense, "repeat" means to do the same thing again, but in exactly the same way. Therefore, if I say "What time is it?", the student also says "What time is it?". So, if my friend asks me "Would you like to repeat it?", it practically sounds like we will go to the same cafe again, but replicate the experience exactly as before - order the same drinks, sit in the same seats, even have the same conversation! That sounds a little tedious, perhaps.

"Repeat" is often used in the context of school and examinations. It's a very unfortunate circumstance, but there are cases of children failing to perform adequately in the school year, and having to start that year over again, falling a whole year behind their peers.
"I'm afraid your son must repeat the fourth grade."「残念ですが、息子さんは4年生を留年するほかはないです。」
It's also not unusual for university students to hear a phrase such as
"I failed the exam, so I have to repeat it."「試験をしくじって追試をうけなくちゃ。」
So make sure to study hard while you are still in school!

What happens when you have started something, but somehow it just isn't working out, so you decide to scrap the idea and start from the beginning again? Well, you can simply say "start again".
"My explanation was too confusing. I'll start again."「私の説明がわかりにくかったですね。最初から言い直します。」
Another very useful phrase is "start over".
"The painting wasn't turning out right, so I started over."「絵がうまくいかなくて最初から描き直し始めた。」
But, in this case, you definitely do not want to repeat it! If you choose to do that, you are just going to repeat that failure... Oops!
"I don't want to repeat the same mistakes I made."「前に失敗したのを繰り返したくない!」

When studying English, it's important to repeat things to improve your speaking and pronunciation. And if you make a mistake, just try again, so that you don't repeat your mistakes.
