「しょうがない」を英語で言える?/諦め・共感・慰めのネイティブ英語表現

諦め・共感・慰めのネイティブ英語表現

"The drink I wanted is sold out."「欲しかった飲み物が売り切れだ。」
-しょうがない!
"We just missed the bus."'「ちょっとの差でバスに乗り遅れたよ。」
-しょうがない!
"I forgot to mail this letter today."「今日この手紙を送るの忘れちゃった。」
-しょうがない!

こういったシチュエーションは毎日のようにありますが、日本の人はこういう場合を「しょうがない」と表現しますよね。そして「この世の終わりというわけではない、そういうこともある」と、がっかりした気持ちをを取り直してまた生活を送ります。英語ネイティブはこういうシチュエーションで何と言うのでしょうか?

(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

"Oh, well" と "These things happen"

「しょうがない」というようなときに、英語ネイティブが一番よく言うのは "Oh, well" だと思います。これを言うということは、その"がっかりの原因"を自分で変えようとしても何もできない、と認めたことになります。例えば:
"I can't find a dress I want. Oh, well."「買いたいワンピースが一つもないわ。まあ、しょうがないよね。」
"These eggs are already gone off. Oh, well. I'll buy more."「この卵がもう悪くなっちゃったけど、しょうがない。また買うね。」

それ以外に、もう一つの普段の表現は "These things happen" 「こういうこともある」です。
"It's sold out? Ahh. Well, these things happen." 「もう売り切れですか?まあ、しょうがないですね。」

動詞 'do' を使う「しょうがないよ」の表現

動詞 'do' を使う表現もいくつかあります。"What can you do?" から始めましょう。これを "What else can you do?" としても言えます。これらの表現は質問文になりえます。でもこの場合は「しょうがないよ」という決まり文句なので、聞かれて返事をする場面ではありません。

A: "I tried apologizing, but she doesn't care."「謝ろうとしたけど彼女は取り合わない。」
B: "What else can you do?"「他にどうしようもないよ。」

同じような表現の "There's nothing I can do" もあります。文末に 'now' を付ければ、「今さら」のようなニュアンスがはっきりします。
"Well, the deadline has already passed, so there's nothing I can do now."「まあ、締め切りがもうすぎちゃったから、もうどうしようもない。」

不幸やネガティブな状況に使う "That's..."

不幸やネガティブな状況に直面したときは、特に次の "That's..." で始まる表現が人気です。

例えば、"That's life"。
"I didn't get the promotion, but that's life."「昇進できなかったが、仕方ないですね。」

人生が勝手にそうなる、自分の力でも何もできない、というときに対してよく "That's [just] the way it is" と言います。
"We lost the match, but that's the way it is."「試合に負けたけど、仕方ないよね。」

あとは僕のお気に入りの "That's the way the cookie crumbles" ということわざです。
"They're getting divorced already? That's the way the cookie crumbles, I guess."「もう離婚するんだ?よくあることだけどね。」

最後に "What's done is done" です。
"I forgot to turn off the oven and now the chicken is ruined. Oh, well. What's done is done." 「オーブンを消すの忘れてもうチキンが台無しになった。まあしょうがないね。もう手遅れだ。」

元気づけたり・励ましたりも出来るよ!

これまで学んだ「しょうがないよ」の表現は、相手を元気づけたり励ましたりするためにもよく使います。
A: "I dropped my phone and now the screen has a crack on it."「スマホを落として画面にひびが入っちゃった。」
B: "That sucks. These things happen, huh?"「ひどいねぇ。でも、そういうこともあるよ、ね?」

他に良い励ましの表現の例は "What more can you do?" や "You did the best you could" です。
A: "I apologized and offered to buy him a new one, but he's not interested."「僕は謝って新しいものを買わせて欲しいと言ったのに、彼は興味ないって。」
B: "What more can you do?" 「他にどうしようもないね。」

A: "I spent weeks on that essay, but I still only got a B."「その作文を何週間も頑張ったのに、Bの成績しか取れなかった。」
B: "You did the best you could."「よく頑張ったじゃん。」

いかがでしたか?今日学んだ表現を自分を慰めたり、他人を励ましたりするのに使ってくださいね!

That's Life

"The drink I wanted is sold out."「欲しかった飲み物が売り切れだ。」
ーしょうがない!
"We just missed the bus."'「ちょっとの差でバスに乗り遅れたよ。」
-しょうがない!
"I forgot to mail this letter today."「今日この手紙を送るの忘れちゃった。」
-しょうがない!

All of these are the kind of unfortunate experiences we suffer daily, but when they happen, it's probably not the end of the world, so we can try to brush them off and continue with the day. For Japanese people, these are typically "shou ga nai" situations. At least, that is the appropriate kind of phrase. But even English speakers are faced with these situations, so what do they say when these things happen?

There are many various phrases and translations appropriate to this kind of phrase. The most likely way that we respond to situations like the above is "Oh, well". This is the kind of phrase that you utter when you know that there's nothing that you can do to change the situation and that you accept it the way it is.
"I can't find a dress I want. Oh, well."「買いたいワンピースが一つもないわ。まあ、しょうがないよね。」
"These eggs are already gone off. Oh, well. I'll buy more."「この卵がもう悪くなっちゃったけど、しょうがない。また買うね。」
Another common choice is "These things happen."
"It's sold out? Ahh. Well, these things happen." 「もう売り切れですか?まあ、しょうがないですね。」

There are also several phrases we like to use that revolve around the verb "do". Let's start with "What can you do?", which can also be said as "What else can you do?".
A: "I tried apologizing, but she doesn't care."「謝ろうとしたけど彼女は取り合わない。」
B: "What else can you do?"「他にどうしようもないよ。」
Although this is a question, think of it as a set phrase. Therefore, it is not necessary to give an answer. Another common phrase is "There's nothing I can do", often followed by "now".
"Well, the deadline has already passed, so there's nothing I can do now."「まあ、締め切りがもうすぎちゃったから、もうどうしようもない。」
Then, there's the phrase "What's done is done".
"I forgot to turn off the oven and now the chicken is ruined. Oh, well. What's done is done." 「オーブンを消すの忘れてもうチキンが台無しになった。まあしょうがないね。もう手遅れだ。」

When we are faced with negative or unlucky situations, we often use phrases starting with "That's...". A very common one is "That's life".
"I didn't get the promotion, but that's life."「昇進できなかったが、仕方ないですね。」
When we have to accept that things just happen they way they do, we might say "That's [just] the way it is."
"We lost the match, but that's the way it is."「試合に負けたけど、仕方ないよね。」
And then there's my personal favourite - "That's the way the cookie crumbles".
"They're getting divorced already? That's the way the cookie crumbles, I guess."「もう離婚するんだ?よくあることだけどね。」

We can also use many of these phrases as the listener, especially as a type of encouragement.
A: "I dropped my phone and now the screen has a crack on it."「スマホを落として画面にひびが入っちゃった。」
B: "That sucks. These things happen, huh?"「ひどいねぇ。でも、そういうこともあるよ、ね?」
Some other good phrases of encouragement are "What more can you do?" and "You did the best you could".
A: "I apologised and offered to buy him a new one, but he's not interested."「僕は謝って新しいものを買わせて欲しいと言ったのに、彼は興味ないって。」
B: "What more can you do?" 「他にどうしようもないね。」
A: "I spent weeks on that essay, but I still only got a B."「その作文を何週間も頑張ったのに、Bの成績しか取れなかった。」
B: "You did the best you could."「よく頑張ったじゃん。」
