I'm going to Kyoto one month later" や
誕生日の話の "After one week is my birthday"など。
旅行について "I flew to Hawaii and I returned two days before" などもネイティブには奇妙です。

例えば、"two weeks ago"「2週間前」、 "In three years"「3年後」など。

"I'm going to visit Thailand in one week, and one week after, I'll fly to China."

He started playing tennis at the age of 5 and he became the national champion 10 years later.

Knowing Whether the Future Has Happened or Not

Whenever a holiday season comes around, I'm always thinking about what kind of plans I should make. And, we sometimes need to plan into the further future. But when we talk about the future, sometimes we mention the future in the past. What I mean is, we need to describe events that happened after another event in the past. In English, different phrases help define whether you're talking about the future as it will happen, or the future as it already happened.

When talking about plans, I hear various expressions from students: "I'm going to Kyoto one month later", "After one week is my birthday". When listening to their stories I might hear "I flew to Hawaii and I returned two days before". Logically, these should make sense, but grammatically they are wrong. In these sort of phrases, the preposition (before, in, after, ago) that you use is the key to achieving the precise meaning. How you use them depends on the moment in time.

If we talk about the future from this moment in time, i.e. right now, we should use "in": "In two weeks", "In three years". "After" is often mistakenly used, but this can only be used to follow a future event, e.g. "I'm going to visit Thailand in one week, and one week after, I will fly to China". Likewise, when expressing a past event from before this moment, we use "ago": "I just arrived 5 minutes ago". But how do we express other future events? This should be followed by "later": "I met my wife in 2001 and we got married 5 years later". Therefore, "we got married 16 years ago".

Prepositions are quite a daunting task for many Japanese people learning English. Us native speakers don't even realize, as we rarely need to think about which the correct one to use is. But perhaps these temporal mistakes are not only to be found in English. Even for those of us learning Japanese, we can somewhat get confused with phrases like 後一週間 and 一週間後. After making that kind of mistake, I learned quite quickly! At least, for perfecting your English, learning the correct preposition to describe the correct moment in time is a great start!
