(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

"I am boring." は「私はうんざりさせる人です。」

話題のロマンチックなラブコメを取り上げて話をしているとしますね。

"What do you think of romance movies?"「ロマンチックな映画はどう思いますか。」
"I am boring." 「私はうんざりさせる人です。」
"Hmm, okay. I disagree! But, what do you think of romance movies?"「

"Hiking is fun, but tiring." 「ハイキングって、楽しいけど疲れるね。」

すなわち、ハイキングが疲れさせることです。使役動詞と同じ意味なので、次のように言ってもいいです。
"Hiking makes me tired."「ハイキングが(私を)疲れさせる。」

「-ed」と「-ing」の使い分けを練習してみよう

このような使い分けのミスがよく起こるので、そうならないように気を付けましょう。もう一つの例です。動詞の excite (興奮する)からきた excited をどう使いますか?

【excite 興奮させる】
-ed excited 興奮している
-ing exciting エキサイティングな

"I was so excited when I heard the news." 「彼に初めて会うので彼女は興奮していた。」

be動詞の代わりに feel を使っても構いません。
"She felt excited about meeting him for the first time."「彼に初めて会うのに彼女は興奮していた。」

Exciting の場合はイベントのような何かについて説明します。
"That was such an exciting magic show!"「そのマジックショーはすごく楽しかった!」

"Waking up on Christmas mornings was so exciting as a kid."「クリスマスの朝に目覚めるのは子供にとってすごくエキサイティングなことだった。」

もうわかりましたね! "I am exciting!" と言ったら文法的には問題ないが、何かすごい特技を披露したほうがいいと思います!

Am I Boring?

What was the last movie you saw? What kind of impression did it leave on you? Different movie genres make us feel different emotions, so people tend to prefer different genres for that reason. I like to watch action movies because they can be exciting, while horror movies makes me feel frightened. These adjectives, however common, can be difficult to use correctly. When I ask students for their impressions on experiences such as movies, I sometimes get odd responses, such as the following.
"What do you think of romance movies?"
"I am boring."
"Hmm, okay. I disagree! But, what do you think of romance movies?"

The phrase "I am boring" is what threw off this conversation and confused both the English native and Japanese native. The student basically told me that he is not an interesting person and that people probably don't enjoy talking to him! Let's look at that exchange again in Japanese.
「ロマンチックな映画をどう思いますか。」
「私はうんざりさせる人です。」
「えっと... そうですか、僕はそうは思いませんが。それはともかくロマンチックな映画についてどう思いますか?」

For certain adjectives, there are two types with two endings: -ed and -ing. They both share the same their origin in a verb, which branches off into two respective adjectives with slightly different meanings and uses. One example is "tire". From this we can create "tired" and "tiring". Here is where the issues start to rear their ugly heads!

-ed adjectives are used to express a feeling, an emotion, so if you have been working hard all day and you come home late, you are entitled to say "I am tired". -ing adjectives are used to describe something (or someone), e.g.
"Hiking is fun, but tiring". 「ハイキングって、楽しいけど疲れるね。」
In other words, hiking makes you tired. So, if you say "I am tiring", you are essentially saying that you are the kind of person who makes others tired easily! Maybe you are a teething toddler that just won't stop crying and keeping your mother awake all night?

This is mistake is so common among my students that I feel it is an important one to address. Let's take another example from the verb "excite". How would you use "excited" in a sentence? Think about your feeling about whatever you are doing or experiencing at a specific moment.
"I was so excited when I heard the news." 「ニュースを聞いてすごく興奮した。」
In place of the "be" verb, you can also use "feel".
"She felt excited about meeting him for the first time."「彼に初めて会うので彼女は興奮していた。」
When using "exciting", this can describe something like an event:
"That was such an exciting magic show!"「そのマジックショーはすごく楽しかった!」
The - ing form is also often used to describe your general opinions about things.
"Waking up on Christmas mornings was so exciting as a kid."「クリスマスの朝に目覚めるのは子供にとってすごくエキサイティングなことだった。」

So, let's remember this pattern for certain adjective types. -ed is only for personal feelings, while -ing describes something. Of course, you may say "I am boring", but don't expect to make a good impression on other people!
